Flooring FAQ

Answers to the questions Hampton Roads homeowners ask us most, by topic and by city. Don't see yours? Call or send us a message.

General questions

Where is ANR Flooring LLC located and what areas do you serve?

We are a locally owned flooring contractor based in Virginia Beach (ZIP 23452). We serve homeowners, landlords and property managers throughout Hampton Roads, including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Hampton and Portsmouth, from Great Neck and Kempsville to Great Bridge, Ghent, Harbour View, Phoebus and Olde Towne.

Do you offer free flooring estimates?

Yes. Call (757) 275-3346 or use the estimate form. We will look at your floors in person, take measurements and give you a clear, written estimate with options. There is no pressure and no cost for the visit.

What types of flooring do you install?

We install solid and engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), laminate, ceramic and porcelain tile, and carpet. We also install and repair stair treads and risers, including retrofit treads, along with the trim, quarter round and transitions that finish a job.

Can my old hardwood floors be refinished instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Many homes in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton and older Virginia Beach neighborhoods have original oak or heart pine under carpet that can be sanded and refinished for much less than new flooring. We will inspect the boards and tell you honestly whether refinishing or replacement makes more sense.

What flooring holds up best to Hampton Roads humidity?

Our coastal humidity and high water table make moisture the number-one concern. For slab homes and first floors, waterproof LVP or engineered hardwood are usually the safest choices. Solid hardwood does very well over a dry crawl space or upstairs when it is properly acclimated. We test moisture before every install.

Do you work with landlords, military families and property managers?

Yes. We regularly help with rental turnovers and move-out repairs near NAS Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk, Joint Base Langley-Eustis and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and we work hard to fit tight schedules. One landlord had a water-damaged bathroom floor replaced within two days of calling us.

How long does a typical flooring project take?

Many single-room LVP, carpet or repair jobs are done in one day. Whole-floor installs often take two to four days, and hardwood refinishing usually takes three to five days including dry time. We give you a schedule up front.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. ANR Flooring LLC is fully licensed and insured and has served Hampton Roads homeowners since 2017. We're happy to provide proof of insurance with your estimate.

How much does new flooring cost in Hampton Roads?

Cost depends on the material, square footage, the condition of the subfloor and how much prep is needed, such as removing old tile or leveling a slab. Because every home is different, we give a free in-home estimate with exact numbers instead of guessing over the phone.

Do I need to move my furniture?

Please remove small items, breakables and electronics before work day. Ask us about larger furniture during your estimate, and we will plan the room-by-room order with you.

Do you remove and haul away old flooring?

Yes. Tear-out and disposal of old carpet, pad, vinyl, laminate and many tile floors can be included in your estimate.

Will you match my existing trim and transitions?

Yes. We replace or reinstall baseboard and quarter round and install transitions to neighboring rooms so the finished floor looks complete, not patched.

Do you offer a warranty?

We stand behind our workmanship. Manufacturer warranties apply to the flooring materials. We will explain both during your estimate.

What payment methods do you accept?

Ask during your estimate, and we will explain payment options and the schedule for your project.

Flooring Installation

How long does flooring installation take?

Most single rooms are finished in a day. Whole-level installs typically take two to four days depending on square footage, tear-out and subfloor prep. Hardwood may need a few days to acclimate before installation begins.

Can you install hardwood over a concrete slab?

Yes, with the right product. Engineered hardwood (floated or glued) and LVP are the best options over slabs, which are common in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake homes. We moisture-test the slab first and use the correct vapor barrier.

Is luxury vinyl plank a good choice near the beach?

LVP is one of the most popular choices at the Oceanfront, Sandbridge and Chic's Beach because it is waterproof, handles humidity and stands up to sand and wet feet better than most flooring.

Flooring Repair

Can you match my existing hardwood?

In most cases, yes. We match species, board width and grain as closely as possible, weave the new boards into the existing floor, and then sand and finish to blend the color. Older heart pine and narrow-strip oak floors in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Hampton can usually be matched.

Should I repair or replace water-damaged flooring?

If the damage is limited to one area and the subfloor is sound, repair is usually the better value. If water spread under a large floating floor or the subfloor is compromised, replacement may be smarter. We will show you what we find and give you both options.

Can you replace a single LVP or laminate plank?

Often, yes, especially if you have leftover planks from the original install. If not, we will help you source a match or recommend replacing the room.

Hardwood Floor Sanding & Refinishing

How much does hardwood floor refinishing cost in Virginia Beach?

Pricing depends on square footage, the floor's condition, any board repairs, your stain choice and the finish. We give a free on-site estimate with a clear price before any work begins.

Can heart pine and old pine floors be refinished?

Yes, and they look amazing. Many historic homes in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Hampton have original pine floors. Pine is softer than oak, so we adjust our sanding approach. One customer's 93-year-old red pine floors came out “gorgeous” in Duraseal Provincial.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Sometimes. It depends on how thick the real-wood wear layer is. We will check before recommending sanding. If it is too thin, a screen-and-recoat or replacement may be the better option.

Tile Floor Installation

How long does a tile floor installation take?

A typical bathroom floor takes one to three days, including tear-out, prep, setting and grouting. Larger kitchens and open areas take longer. Grout and thinset need cure time before heavy use.

Can you tile over my existing floor?

Sometimes, but we usually recommend removing old tile or vinyl so we can inspect and correct the subfloor. That is the best way to prevent cracked tiles and grout later.

Is wood-look tile a good alternative to hardwood?

Yes, especially in bathrooms, laundry rooms and beach homes in Sandbridge or Ocean View where water and sand are constant. It gives you the plank look with complete water resistance.

Carpet Installation

How long does carpet installation take?

Most homes are done in a day, including removal of old carpet and pad. Larger homes or carpeted stairs may take a little longer.

Should I replace the pad too?

Yes, almost always. New carpet over old, compressed pad wears faster and can void the carpet warranty. Quality pad makes carpet feel better and last longer.

Can you carpet my stairs and put hardwood in the rest of the house?

Absolutely. Many Chesapeake and Suffolk two-story homes mix LVP or hardwood downstairs with carpet upstairs. We can also convert carpeted stairs to hardwood treads if you prefer.

Stair Tread Installation

What are retrofit stair treads?

Retrofit treads are designed to cap over existing stair steps after the carpet and bullnose are removed. They are a cleaner, faster way to get hardwood stairs in most homes, and a favorite of our customers.

Can you match my stairs to my new LVP floor?

Yes. Many LVP lines have matching stair nosing, or we can pair the floor with coordinating wood treads. One Virginia Beach customer had LVP installed downstairs, then upstairs and on the stair treads, and said everything “looks perfect.”

How long does a stair installation take?

A standard straight staircase usually takes one to two days. Winding stairs, landings and paint or stain on risers can add time.

Stair Step Repair

Can you fix squeaky stairs without replacing them?

Usually, yes. Most squeaks come from treads rubbing on risers or stringers. We re-secure and shim the steps to stop the movement.

Can you replace just one broken stair tread?

Yes. We can remove and replace a single tread and stain or finish it to blend with the rest of the staircase.

Can my old stairs be refinished to match new floors?

In most cases. We sand the treads, apply your stain and finish, and paint or protect the risers so the stairs coordinate with your refinished or new floors.

Is hardwood a good idea over a crawl space in Suffolk?
